Freedom of Expression
Freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of any democratic and inclusive society. Sorrowfully the space for freedom of expression is decreasing worldwide – so is the case in Pakistan too. The Nexus believes that freedom of expression must be nurtured, not feared. Constructive discourse allows societies to evolve, governments to improve, and citizens to participate meaningfully in governance. At the same time, we also recognize that no right is absolute. Unbridled expression that fuels hatred, incites violence, or disrespects religious beliefs undermines the very spirit of freedom it claims to serve. Therefore, the Nexus stands firmly against hate speech, defamatory campaigns, and blasphemous content – against all religions and beliefs.
We advocate for a balanced framework: one that safeguards free speech while ensuring responsibility, tolerance, and respect. Rather than restricting voices or imposing excessive controls, Pakistan would benefit from strengthening its libel and slander laws and ensuring their fair and impartial enforcement. This approach would promote accountability without silencing legitimate criticism or public debate.
One must admit here, despite existing challenges, there are many positive signs too. A growing number of young journalists, digital creators, and community leaders continue to use their voices constructively, championing social justice and reform. With greater collaboration between media, state institutions, and civil society, Pakistan can foster an environment where expression becomes a vehicle for progress, not polarization.
At the Nexus, we believe in contributing to this evolution – by promoting responsible expression, legal awareness, and dialogue rooted in respect and evidence. The Nexus will therefore play an active part in strengthening freedom of expression in Pakistan – anchored in truth, empathy, and shared responsibility.
